Jazz  Vocal Ensemble

Thank you for your interest in Incendia!  To be a part of this premier Jazz Ensemble, you must be committed to developing your skills as a jazz musician and soloist.  This group places a lot of responsibility on individual development as a part of developing a strong ensemble.  Members should expect to learn a standard jazz song every two weeks outside of class and perform it for their peers for feedback and performance opportunities.  All jazz singers will learn to improvise, follow lead sheets, develop their interpretation of the standards.  As part of Incendia, you will rehearse jazz choral literature, further developing your sense of jazz harmony, style, and choral concepts, such as blend, tone, dynamics, and diction.  If you're ready to work hard and hone your craft and musicianship, both as a soloist and as an ensemble musician, than this ensemble may be the right fit for you.

AUDITION PROCESS

In order to join Incendia, you must audition EVERY year!  A different jazz standard is selected every year.  You must memorize the song and perform it with the accompaniment track provided.  You must sing an improvised scat solo as a part of your audition.  Your scat solo will not be judged in your score.  However, if you do not attempt the scat solo you will not be considered for the ensemble.  Scatting is an important part of the jazz language and it is developed through listening and willing experimentation.  Naturally, scatting is very intimidating to many beginning jazz singers.  However, we must be willing to face this fear in order to develop skills.  Your willingness to attempt the scat solo during your audition shows me that you genuinely are willing to do what it takes to be a part of this group and that you will be a team player in the ensemble.

Below you will find this year's audtion song: "I Concentrate on You", which is available in a low key and a high key.  Click on the images below to print the music off for your practice.  Click on the audio file that best suits your voice type.  You may find the videos below helpful as you prepare to interpret the song.  For your convenience, the music is viewable below.  However, physical copies may be attained from Mrs. Wood.
